Why Taking a Break from Your Sport Might Not Be the Best Idea

One of the most common pitfalls athletes fall into is taking an extended break from their sport, only to return years later and find themselves struggling to catch up. It’s a scenario I’ve seen all too often among friends and teammates who have stepped away due to life changes—be it financial issues, marriage, children, or other responsibilities.

Here’s the hard truth: time doesn’t stop for anyone, including for those who continue to train and compete while you’re on a hiatus. When you return to the sport after a long break, it can feel as though the world has moved on without you. This can be incredibly discouraging and might even make you question whether you want to continue at all.

To avoid this frustration and stay connected with your sport, my advice is simple: don’t give up. Even if your schedule only allows for practice once every couple of weeks, maintaining some level of involvement will help you stay in touch with your skills and the community. This way, when you’re ready to dive back in more fully, you won’t feel like you’re starting from scratch.

Staying engaged, even in a small way, will make your return to the sport smoother and far less daunting.
